Mount Kenya University (MKU) is a chartered University committed to a broad-based, holistic and inclusive system of education. The University is a member of the Inter-University Council of East Africa as well as the Association of Commonwealth Universities. Mount Kenya University (MKU) School of Medicine recently achieved global recognition with its inclusion in the World Directory of Medical Schools in April 2025, making its degrees eligible for ECFMG certification in the U.S., and recognition by the General Medical Council in the UK. In addition, the school became a full member of the Consortium of Medical Schools – Africa (COMS-A) in June 2025, an achievement that highlights its commitment to excellence in medical education across the African continent.

Qualification

To qualify for appointment a candidate must have the following:

1. A Master’s degree qualification in the relevant area of specialization from recognized/accredited university
2. At least three years teaching and research experience at a university,
3. Relevant Work experience in Industry will be an added advantage
4. Be registered for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree qualification;
5. Be registered by the relevant Professional Body (where applicable).
6. At least 16 publication points of which 8 should be from refereed scholarly journals

Key responsibilities

You will be responsible for: -

1. Adherence to the teaching requirements as per the curriculum.
2. Administration of Continuous Assessments Tests.
3. Examination Setting, Administration & Marking.
4. Deliver high-quality learning experiences for undergraduate and graduate students through the preparation of teaching materials, the preparation of class methodology or activities, and the actual delivery of the curriculum in class.
5. Keep abreast of developments within the academic discipline or professional practice of the Subject area, and share this knowledge to shape curriculum content, design, and delivery.
6. Ensure that content, methods of delivery and learning materials meet the defined learning objectives and that they are regularly reviewed for opportunities for improvement.
7. Ensure timely student assessment through the preparation, moderation, administration and marking of examinations.
8. Guide students at undergraduate and graduate level in identifying research topics, concept development, proposal development and supervision.
9. Ensure that accurate student records, including registers, reports, student assessment and achievement are updated in the Academic Management System.
10. Identify sources of funding through grant writing to advance research portfolio at the school.
11. Engage in publishing papers as well as attending, participating, presenting papers in workshops, conferences and professional seminars.
12. Collaborate with other researchers internally, nationally and internationally, for purposes of establishing research linkages and contribute to attainment of the school’s research objectives.
13. Responsible for administrative duties when called for including at not limited to leadership of academic programmes, membership of different committees, or being part of the management of the school.
