Overview

Mount Kenya University (MKU) is a chartered University committed to a broad-based, holistic and inclusive system of education. The University is a member of the Inter-University Council of East Africa as well as the Association of Commonwealth Universities. The University operates from the main campus in Thika with campuses in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret and Meru, as well as Open Distance and Electronic Learning (ODEL) administrative centers located in major towns in Kenya, Burundi, Somaliland and Uganda.

In pursuit of fulfilling the Mission and Vision of the University, the Directorate of Human Resource is mandated to facilitate and support the Mission and operations of the University by enabling it to continue attracting, developing and retaining the right number of suitably qualified staff so as to maintain the University’s competitive edge. MKU invites applications from qualified and experienced scholars for appointment as External Examiners in various academic programmes offered in its thirteen (13) Schools as follows:

  1. Medical School
  2. School of Business and Economics
  3. School of Education
  4. School of Social Sciences
  5. School of Law
  6. School of Computing and Informatics
  7. School of Engineering, Energy and the Built Environment
  8. School of Pharmacy
  9. School of Nursing
  10. School of Clinical Medicine
  11. School of Public Health
  12. School of Pure and Applied Sciences
  13. School of Hospitality, Travel & Tourism Management

Qualification

To qualify for appointment a candidate must:

  • Hold an earned PhD degree in the relevant discipline from a recognized academic institution.
  • Be at least at the rank of Senior Lecturer or equivalent in a recognized university or institution of higher learning.
  • Demonstrate a strong record of teaching, research, and academic supervision in the relevant field.
  • Have experience in examination moderation, curriculum development, and quality assurance processes.
  • Be registered with the relevant professional body where applicable.
  • Not be a current member of staff of Mount Kenya University.

Key responsibilities also include

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Moderate examination papers and marking schemes before administration.
  • Review and moderate marked examination scripts, projects, dissertations, theses and other assessments as applicable.
  • Evaluate the academic standards of programmes and assessments against national and international benchmarks.
  • Provide independent reports on the quality and standards of academic programmes.
  • Advise the University on curriculum development, assessment practices, and academic quality enhancement.
  • Attend examination boards and academic meetings when invited by the University.
  • Submit annual reports on the conduct and standards of examinations and academic programmes.
